Think you know guitar? Think again.

Think you know guitar? Think again.

Guitar nerds and music lovers, this one’s for you!

International Guitar Night is the world’s premier touring guitar festival and it’s coming to the Arts Centre January 26 for a night with some of the most innovative and talented musicians in the world of acoustic guitar.

Hosted by gypsy-jazz guitar legend Lulo Reinhardt, the 2017 tour adds three incredibly dynamic musicians to their roster: Italy’s innovative contemporary guitarist Luca Stricagnoli; brilliant young Brazilian composer/performer Chrystian Dozza, and India’s ground-breaking slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya.

Let’s take a closer look at these pros:

Lulo Reinhardt

Remember this legend?

Here’s his great nephew:

Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Or the pick doesn’t fall far from the strings? There’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

Lulo Reinhardt is a gypsy-jazz legend in his own right. A third generation master from Germany, he has inherited the Reinhardt soul, speed, and dexterity, with the added bonus of an updated repertoire.

He has travelled all over the world playing with musicians from Brazil, Spain, and Africa. It is through these experiences he developed and defined his own style of playing which he calls Latin Swing.

While it’s not the traditional gypsy-jazz style of his great uncle (the distinguishing feature being that Latin Swing has a drums and piano), Lulo’s name and unique style have received international acclaim.

Luca Stricagnoli

At just 22 years old, Luca was signed to a US label and his debut videos for the label launched him into internet stardom. With a cool 21 million online views under his belt, the now 23 year-old is jet-setting to perform all over the world. You’ve likely seen videos like this one pop up on your Facebook feed now and then:

Yeah. He’s that good. And this tour is his North American debut. With his good looks, genre-defying guitar techniques, and online success, Luca is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new players on the acoustic guitar scene.

Chrystian Dozza

Chrystian Dozza is spearheading a new generation of Brazilian instrumental musicians. A talented guitarist, Chrystian has won many prestigious awards as one of Brazil’s leading young guitarists and, as it turns out, is also an equally talented composer. With a Brazilian popular and folk influence, Chrystian’s performances blend refined classical technique with the raw edge and emotion of his Brazilian roots.

Debashish Bhattacharya

A pioneer in the guitar world, Debashish is turning traditional Indian music on its head having invented his own technique for playing classical Indian music on the slide guitar.  His Indian Raga Music performances thrive on improvisation and blindingly fast melodies and has collaborated with some of the top musicians from around the world.

It’s going to be an awesome night of music you won’t soon forget, showcasing the dexterity and diversity in the world of acoustic guitar. Jazz, folk, blues, classical, Spanish guitar, and finger picking – you name it! These guys play it all.

Explore the new exhibit in The Gallery, enjoy a drink at the cash bar, and kick off your musical evening with local favourite, Blue Phoenix as he warms up the crowd with his unique jazz and R&B crooner ballads and blues. Blue Phoenix performs at 7:15pm with International Guitar Night guitarists starting at 8pm.

Bring the whole family to this all-ages show and introduce your kids to music that will blow their little minds. Whether you’re a seasoned “guitar nerd” or a lover of all things music, International Guitar Night is sure to be an inspiring and memorable evening for music lovers and musicians alike.
