Backdrop Sessions with Heidi Denessen

Heidi Denessen creates beautiful nature-inspired paintings and imagery that are then transformed into vibrant, fun clothing for women. Heidi the Artist’s grassroots clothing line is conscious and locally made using ethical fabrics with a portion of all sales helping to support The Yoga Outreach Society.

Heidi was born in Victoria, BC and grew up in West Vancouver. She spent lots of time camping, skiing and boating around South West BC as a child and threw herself into art and sport throughout her school years. In her travels, she made Whistler her home several times in her 20’s and now lives here with her husband and two sons.

Heidi received her BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in 2001. Several years later she completed her teaching certificate from SFU and went on the teach high school art. Heidi decided to leave teaching after having her boys so she could stay at home to raise them and it’s during these years that she began selling her art online and at markets. Soon after, she developed her clothing line which features prints of her work.

Heidi understood that not everyone is in the market to purchase original art, but having art on your clothing is a more everyday way to bring art into your life. With this realization, Heidi the Artist clothing line was born and she has never looked back. Heidi sells her work through her online shop, at markets, at the Audain Art Museum, and the Maury Young Arts Centre.

Heidi loves to ski, run, bike, SUP, travel, and hang out with her friends, husband, kids, dog and two cats. Heidi continues to push herself as a visual artist and designer. She is inspired by Whistler’s breathtaking beauty, sports, and the eclectic people who live here.
