Get to the “Art” of Whistler’s Cypress Point Winter Carnival

Guest Author: Angie Nolan

Hey all you winter lovers! It’s time to get to The Point! The Cypress Point Winter Carnival that is.

If you haven’t yet experienced the magic of The Point Artist Run Centre, then the annual Cypress Point Winter Carnival on February 18th might just be your perfect opportunity to be introduced to a very special place.
In a world-class ski resort it’s sometimes hard to know where to uncover a true local experience. The Point is that and so much more. With it’s grassroots programming and community spirit, this is an organization committed to creating a home base and hub where artists can work, exhibit, perform, improve their craft, and interact with the general public. Not to mention it is home to some of the best darn hootenannies around.

But, back to the carnival…

The Cypress Point Winter Carnival harnesses all that is authentic about this place. Calling on not-so-far-gone traditions of frozen lake fun and combining that with exciting new artists and musicians, this event is an extravaganza of heartfelt, feel-good, small-town celebration.

This year has a theme and it’s a nod to all things Narnia! Which means there is something for Lions, Witches, Snow Queens, Princes, and Magicians of all ages. Organizers invite everyone to show up in costume or dive into the tickle trunk on location and whip something up on the spot for a Narnia-themed winter!

Nothing in life is free. Well, except these things…

We all love things that are free and there will be plenty of that here. Free events for children and adults from noon to 5pm include snow sculpting and ice carving contests, live music, shinny and curling on the lake (ice permitting), doughnut eating contest, fireside sing-along, live painting, Speakers’ Corner, and more.

Did someone say cheese, chocolate, and chili?!

Another wonderful treat about this place is the food. This is comfort food at it’s finest. Made with love at the hands of local culinary crackerjacks. For purchase there will be hot chili and bannock, or raclette at the outdoor kitchen, and a hot chocolate, mulled wine, or cold drink at the ice bar. Yes, I said ice bar – something for the grown up kids to enjoy.

When the free stuff ends the party doesn’t.

You haven’t fully experienced the glory of this place until you partake in the evening events. For a small fee, you can rub elbows with some of Whistler’s finest artists, musicians and local characters. Before the band strikes up and dancing shoes are thrown on, carnival goers will be treated to performances by local actors. This ticketed evening show starts at 6pm featuring premiere Canadian rockabilly and roots band Cousin Harley! Opening performances include musicians Jeremy Parnell and Michael Faiella, Get to The Point Improv Comedy, Winter Monologues, live art auction and a rollicking good time!

Tickets are available online and at Armchair Books in Whistler Village.

The Cypress Point Winter Carnival is an annual event that brings locals and tourists together in the spirit of all that is magnificent about winter. It pulls you out of the rat race for a moment and slows things down for a while. It’s an event immersed in joyful and authentic celebration. It will fill you and get you to the ‘art’ of what’s important around these parts – friends, family, fun, community, and nature.

The Point is dedicated to incubating artistic excellence in Whistler through arts education, affordable live/work space, and collaborative projects that engage the broad community.
