It’s that holly jolly time of year when the village is lit up like a scene from a Dr. Seuss book and throngs of visitors are wandering around rosy-cheeked and excited to spend their holidays in one of the greatest winter destinations in the world – Whistler!
With the recent dumps of snow it may feel like Christmas came early, but it’s still on the way so there’s much to look forward to during this magical time of year.
With pieces from local and internationally renowned artists, Whistler’s impressive art gallery scene is a great way to spend some time exploring while keeping toasty warm. Create your own adventure with Culture Maps from the Maury Young Arts Centre or check out the Culture Maps online. Visit Whistler’s cultural hubs along the Cultural Connector route. Learn about First Nations history at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre or explore the new exhibit Ancestral Modern: Australia Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection at the Audain Art Museum, check out Coast Mountain Gothic: A History of the Coast Mountain Gothic Arch Huts at the Whistler Museum, and be sure to discover Through the Looking Glass: An ARTventure, now on at The Gallery at Maury Young Arts Centre.
If you’ve waited until the last minute to shop, there’s no need to stress AND you can be sure to shop local too! Check out the Made in Whistler Market Saturdays from 12pm-6pm at The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler. Get to know the Whistler artist community by discovering a beautiful array of fine art, handmade artisan wares, scarves, jewelry and delicious treats. These markets run right through until April so if you happen to be the recipient of cold hard cash this Christmas, the Made in Whistler Market is a great spot to find yourself something memorable to remind you of how epic Whistler is. Bonus Made in Whistler Market events will be held on December 24, 26 & 31.
Explore the magic of this mountain town with our annual Whistler Holiday Experience. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, you can get out with the whole family and discover an enchanted Whistler at Christmas. On now through December 30 (closed December 25), from 10am-6pm, kids can enjoy a mini-putt course, bouncy castles, crafts, and video games in the Family Fun Zone. What better way to burn off that gingerbreaded, candy caned energy– and it’s all free over Christmas! If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, there’s a lounge area with coffee and hot chocolate to relax in after a big day on the mountain.
Après isn’t just for the big kids, littles ones need to let loose after a big day on the hill too! Practicing your “pizza/french fries” all day can take its toll on little legs after all, so pick ‘em up and head on over to Family Après at Whistler Olympic Plaza, happening each Monday and Wednesday from 3pm-6pm. Enjoy a variety of outdoor winter activities, live entertainment and arts and crafts, all for the kids. Warm up with a hot chocolate, play on the toboggan run and create some amazing family memories this holiday season. We all know Whistler knows how to après – now the whole family can get in on the fun!
If you’re seeking the ultimate winter holiday activity it doesn’t get more perfect than outdoor skating. Pull of those ski and snowboard boots and squeeze on a pair of skates for a spin around the ice rink in Whistler Olympic Plaza. Admission is free and skate rentals are only $6 for this postcard holiday experience. Surrounded by the mountains, skating around under the sparkling lights is an experience you won’t soon forget.
Lastly, the holiday’s wouldn’t be complete without ringing in the New Year with Whistler Presents New Year’s Eve. The excitement starts early in Olympic Plaza, with an expanded Family Après where everyone can experience a taste of Canadian outdoor fun. Or come in from the cold, get cozy and discover a variety of activities at the Whistler Conference Centre. Both venues will offer entertainment from noon. Want to ring in the new year early? A High-Flying Snow Show at the base of Whistler Mountain will begin at 7:30 pm with a fireworks show at 8 p.m. The new year will be officially welcomed with a Special Edition Fire & Ice Show starting at 11:30 pm, capped off with a colorful, grand finale fireworks show at midnight.
There’s been enough snow lately to permanently plaster a grin on everyone’s face, and even though we’ve given you a thorough list of fun things to do this holiday season, the activity at the top of everyone’s list is to get up these mountains and SHRED! We hope you do, so have fun, be safe and get in some good turns. Be sure to take a wander around the Village and explore the full scope of Whistler this holiday season. Wherever Whistler’s holiday offerings take you, Arts Whistler invites you to enjoy the wonder and magic of the season!
The Whistler Holiday Experience, New Years Eve, Skating at Whistler Olympic Plaza and Family Après are brought to you by the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Province of BC.
