Firing up the Spotlight for Whistler Film Festival Honourees
It’s that time of year when the team from the Whistler Film Festival gets ready to roll out the red carpets and give them a very thorough vacuum. The spotlights are about to be fired up, the popcorn is ready to be popped, and we can’t wait to see celebs shushing down the slopes and enjoying a pint or two before their film premieres.
The festival honours exceptionally gifted and talented performers each year, and this years guest list will surely be a huge draw to the festival, now in its 19th year. The popular Signature Series recognizes distinguished artists of our time and honours them with an intimate on-stage interview and award, complimented by a feature presentation of their most recent film.
Whistler Film Festival will celebrate the impressive career and achievements of British actor Simon Pegg with the Maverick Award. You may remember his break-through film ‘Shaun of the Dead‘, best known for turning the zombie movie genre onto its head with irreverent humour and hilarity. Like many actors, his career began in stand up comedy, but a string of successful films such as Hot Fuzz, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and Star Wars: The Force Awakens has cemented Pegg as a ‘geek-boy favourite’ and respected actor for his bold choices in roles. His film ‘Lost Transmissions’ will be opening the festival on December 4th with its Canadian premiere, and he will be accepting his award at Artist Spotlight on December 5th.
Stand-up comedian, actress, and writer Chelsea Perretti will be celebrated and honoured with the WFF Trailblazer Award. You may recognize this engaging and hilarious starlet from her turn as Gina on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, but she has blazed a unique and inspiring trail through films, with her feature film ‘Spinster’ debuting with its World Premiere at the festival. Her Artist Conversation on December 6th will surely be as unique and entertaining as she is – how could it not be- this woman was voted one of Variety’s ‘Top 10 Comics to Watch’, among other accolades.
Joe Pantoliano may be a name you don’t immediately recognize… but you should. You’ll immediately recognize his face when this star film, television, and stage hits the carpet. With over 150 credits and one Emmy award to his name, Joe Pantoliano has played many a diverse and memorable role. Honoured with the Career Achievement Award, his Artist Tribute will be a fascinating journey through his career as he reflects on such iconic roles as Cypher in ‘The Matrix‘ or Ralph in ‘The Sopranos’. Here in Whistler presenting the Western Canadian Premiere of his film ‘From the Vine’, join this prolific actor as he accepts his award on December 5th.
Each year Hollywood stars shine brightly in our little ski town, and we get the opportunity to show them how special Whistler is. The only thing that can sparkle as bright as stars like these? Whistler itself.
