April 6 | The Gallery at the Arts Centre, Whistler
Imagine a room full of artwork and you get to choose your favourite piece – you don’t know who’s painted it or if you’ll even get it in the end, but that’s all part of the fun. What? We hear you cry. Well, let us tell you…
On Friday, April 6 you better get your game face on for one of the most exciting art buying events in Whistler’s history – The Anonymous Art Show. Artists from all over the Sea to Sky Corridor and beyond have contributed an 8 x 8, one-of-a-kind piece of artwork specifically for this show. Displayed in the Maury Young Arts Centre Gallery it’s a first come, first served buying process – think the last Vera Wang wedding dress in a 50% sale, but instead of brides-to-be, you’re battling art lovers.
You need to purchase your event ticket ahead of time and you’ll be given three options, let’s call these ‘tiers’. When the doors open for the evening the first tier will get to peruse the artwork and select their favourite piece. These people are laughin’ – they’ve just got an original for peanuts. Then the second tier goes, and finally the third. The lower your ticket tier the more risk you take for your favourite piece being snatched up by someone else, so you’ve got to be tactical. You might be looking out for a specific artist, browsing the varied options, or choosing one that goes with your maroon bathroom decor – who knows – it’s a mystery.
Strategic Tip: We’ll be hosting a “Sneak Peek Party” on Tuesday, April 3 where people will be able to take a look at the Anonymous Art Show pieces each day until the grand event on Friday, April 6.
This event is a fundraiser for the Arts Whistler Awards and Bursaries Program which we use to support the Grade 7 and 12 Student Art Awards and fund community group grants, like the Whistler Writer’s Group, The Point Artist-Run Centre, and Whistler Singers. What’s super cool is that for this event Scotiabank has come on board to match what we raise dollar for dollar up to $5,000 – which flows right back into our community’s arts scene. A big shoutout to Race & Company LLP who have signed up as the event sponsor for the Friday, April 6th event to help Arts Whistler maximize profits for Scotiabank to match.
