Banff, AB – The Town of Banff Community Art Committee is pleased to invite artists from Alberta and British Columbia to participate in an exciting, high-impact public art exhibition. Proposals are being accepted for a 2D artwork to be digitally produced and installed within Banff townsite. Images of representational artwork in media including painting (traditional and digital), drawing, printmaking, and photography will be accepted for consideration.

The exhibition will involve one artwork printed on weather-resistant vinyl and mounted to a 40 ft. x 32 ft. panel publically located on an exterior north-facing wall of the Mount Royal Hotel (138 Banff Avenue). The exhibition of this work will run for a five year period.

ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to all professional emerging, mid-career, or established Canadian artists possessing a demonstrated capacity for working effectively with municipal project teams and adhering to project timelines. Artists from Alberta and British Columbia are encouraged to apply, however, the artwork submitted should demonstrate knowledge of, or connection to, Banff and/or the Bow Valley region.

SITE/LOCATION: The artwork installation site is located on the Mount Royal Hotel. The building wall is oriented towards a public surface parking lot heavily used by both visitors to Banff, guests of the Mount Royal Hotel and local residents; it is also highly visible from the adjacent Beaver Street and Caribou Street.

THEME AND STYLE: Artists are required to submit work that explores, complements, and/or expands upon the concepts that are traditionally associated with the history of the Banff town and the mountain community that grew from it. The work should celebrate mountain culture through an appreciation of the intersections between people and/or between people and the mountain environment. Work will ideally be in a representational or realistic style and executed in media such as painting (traditional and digital), drawing, printmaking, and photography. Artists should also take into consideration the nature of the public space in which the image will be installed as well as the architectural context of the exhibition space.



Artists may submit up to two images for consideration. All required submission materials shall be sent electronically to publicart@banff.ca and must include the following:

1. Artist Contact Information: email address, daytime telephone number, and mailing address.

2. Artist Statement (Maximum of 150 words).

3. Image List: Description of image(s) and relevancy to the exhibition site – maximum of 100 words per image.

4. File Attachments: Image(s) in jpg format at 1024×768 pixels and 72dpi. Filename(s) must contain ‘Artist Name’ and ‘Title of Artwork’. Example: Smith-Birth_of_Venus.jpg

Please note: Submitted images must be cropped proportional to the 40 ft. x 32 ft panel size to allow for the adjudication of undistorted images. High resolution images will be required of successful artists.

SELECTION PROCESS/TIMELINE: A five-person adjudication committee comprised of four members of the Community Art Committee and one representative of the Pursuit Collection will review submissions and select one artwork for the exhibition. Successful applicants will be notified by a member of The Banff Community Art Committee.

Proposals must be submitted by 4:00pm MDT on January 15, 2019. Proposals submitted after this time will not be accepted for consideration.
