Arts Whistler & Cinema Politica Present: Documentary Futurism
Science Fiction-influenced Indigenous and Afrofuturist short films
Don’t miss an evening of thought-provoking and progressive short films from across Canada. This two-hour program of speculative short films envision various futures for Canada through Afrofuturist and Indigenous futurist perspectives – from dystopia to utopia, expect the unexpected. The films are impressive in how they blend documentary approaches with science fiction storytelling – some witty and insightful, others poetic and experimental, offering a range of stories.
The project was commissioned by Cinema Politica, a Montreal-based organization that showcases documentaries across the country, and is hosted by local director tobias c. van Veen, whose Afrofuturist short film Lost Alien was (secretly) shot right here in Whistler. These films were made possible through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Films will be followed by a Q+A with tobias c. van Veen, director of Lost Alien. Find out more about tobias.
