'The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photography' Organized by the Canadian Photography Institute of the National Gallery of Canada @ Audain Art Museum

The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs is a celebration of the art of photography from the Canadian Photography Institute of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. This exhibition explores the development of photography from daguerreotype photographs to digital images, monochrome to saturated colour, while exploring the production of photojournalism, vernacular photographs, and portraiture. Collected over a fifty year period, some highlights include: Alethia (Alice Liddel) (1872) by Julia Margaret Cameron (British, 1815-1879), Photographer’s Display (c. 1936) by Walker Evans (American, 1903-1975), Valencia, Spain (1933, printed before 1947) by Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908-2004), Self-portrait (1983) by Arnaud Maggs (Canadian, 1926-2012), James # 5 (2008) by Spring Hurlbut (Canadian, 1952 –), and To Raise the Water Level in a Fish Pond (Close Up) (1997) by Zhang Huan (Chinese, 1965 – ), among many others. Featuring 70 photographs and related images that range from 1850s to 2000s, the exhibition demonstrates the technological advances over the decades and reveals that the basic impetus behind the art of photography remains the same. Ann Thomas, Senior Curator at the Canadian Photography Institute, and the Curator of The Extended Moment states that “it is not only the way in which the camera – analogue or digital – captures and fixes the instant that captivates us, but also the enduring fascination with the resulting images that gives: The Extended Moment.”
