If you want to find out why Bowen is referred to as the ‘Happy Isle’ then head to the Bowen Island Museum & Archives. Their permanent exhibit has photographs, stories, maps, and memorabilia from 1900 – 1958 covering the ‘Paradise Playground’ era of the island.
This can be found in the Catherine Carter Room inside the main building along with a rotating exhibit. The current (as of July 2017) rotating exhibit is ‘Party’s On: Bowen’s Completely Incomplete History of Celebration’, which serves to honour and share the histories of celebration, festivities, and entertainment on Bowen. Take it from us – they certainly know how to throw a party!
Who’s Bert Higgins?
He was the owner of the Higgins Cabin which is now a permanent part of the museum where you can see what it would have been like to be a logger back in 1948. There’s a two-room display where you can view the collection of logger’s tools commonly used on Bowen Island, from an early wood-framed bow saw to a 1950s chainsaw.
