COMING IN HOT! THE ART OF FLAMENCO WITH KASANDRA “LA CHINA”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, April 26, 2017

WHISTLER, BC – Revel in the rich music of award-winning, international musicians and adrenaline fueled dance of Spanish flamenco at La Tarara, Saturday, May 6 at Arts Whistler Live! Hot off the heels of the sell-out success of International Guitar Night earlier this season, Arts Whistler Live! is back with another musical spectacular. Arts Whistler Live! gets a little spicy with the hottest, most passionate flamenco dancing, sure to transport you to the heat and romance of southern Spain. Pack your bags for this “vacation via dance” at La Tarara, Saturday, May 6, at the Arts Centre.

Kasandra “La China” is one of Canada’s leading flamenco artists well-known for her unrelenting drive to push the artistic envelope. She has made eight trips to Spain studying flamenco for months at a time in Madrid, Jerez de la Frontera, and Seville with many flamenco masters over two decades.

La Tarara is a duality between flamenco dancers of very different backgrounds and a meeting between the raw intensity of flamenco dance and the refined elegance of Spanish dance. Ivan Vargas was born in the caves of Sacromonte and hails from Granada’s flamenco dynasty “Los Maya”. He evokes the essence of Flamenco Puro – the expression of pure unadulterated emotion. He collides with six-time award winner and dance phenomenon from the Spanish National Ballet, Emilio Ochando, who is classically trained in Spanish Dance. His ability to dance ballet, danza espanola, folk, bolero, and flamenco has led to his unique style that rests on the cutting edge of flamenco dance blended with elegant contemporary movement.

So, what exactly is flamenco? “The dance was born out of tragedy and oppression and flamenco perhaps is most famed for deep, profound song,” says Kasandra. “True flamenco is an interplay between dancer, singer, guitarist, and palmero (hand-clapping). The dance interprets the song. It is very spontaneous, raw, and much of it is improvised. It is a very high octane show.”

Expect feisty duos, romantic duets, hot-blooded flamenco, and world class music at La Tarara. Come early to grab a drink at the bar and explore the Teeny Tiny Show in The Gallery. Tickets available at artswhistler.com
