Pop in to celebrate the Pop-Up.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, June 17, 2016
WHISTLER, BC – Proving the popular adage, “If we build it they will come”, when spaces are provided for artists to create, the results are spectacular. Celebrating the one year anniversary of Whistler’s only Pop-Up Studio space, the Creative Boom exhibit shines the light on artists who have produced work in the studio over the past year. From concept to creation the 12 select artists in this exhibit have all created their art in the shared studio workspace.
The exhibit is at The Gallery at the Arts Centre from June 16 – August 16 with an exciting opening night celebration on Thursday, June 23. Starting at 7pm, guests can mix and mingle with the artists, grab a drink, and check out Whistler’s impressive local talent.
The Pop-Up studio was created based on an identified need in Whistler for access to affordable space for local and emerging artists to work and create. Over the past year, the studio was located in a previously empty 2,200 sq. ft. retail space at The Westin Resort & Spa. As an initiative of the Community Cultural Office in partnership with Arts Whistler, this venue provided an affordable work space for local artists to focus on their artistic practice. Arts Whistler is grateful to the Cressey Development Group whose generosity enabled the use of the retail space.
“The Pop-up Studio was a bold undertaking to provide affordable, shared working space for local artists. By all accounts, it was a great success, providing over 35 artists with a place to create their work on a daily basis. If you work every day, your work gets better, especially when you work alongside other artists” says Community Cultural Officer, Anne Popma. “For many artists, the next career step is their first exhibit, being staged in the Gallery in Maury Young Art Centre throughout the summer. Drop by and have a look, and stay tuned to see where the studio pops up next!”
Artists included in the exhibit are Kristi Poole -Adler, Alanna Sulz, Claire Gaulin-Brown, Heidi Denessen, Carol Roberts, Wendy Hargreaves, Monika Rosen, Amanda Shatzko, Toby Jaxon, Andy Anissimoff, Kylie Millar, Phillipa Campbell, Angela Muellers, Roberta Horn, Laura Sulz, and Nevada Christianson.
To celebrate these artists’ accomplishments, join us for the Creative Boom Opening Night party at The Gallery at the Arts Centre Thursday, June 23 and raise a glass to Whistler’s local artists.
