IRA PETTLE NAMED 2019 CHAMPION OF ARTS & CULTURE
AT THE WHISTLER EXCELLENCE AWARDS
WHISTLER, BC – A key player in Whistler performing arts scene, Ira Pettle, has been awarded the 2019 Champion of Arts & Culture Award at the Whistler Excellence Awards this evening.
Ira is well respected as an actor and arts educator, but perhaps is best known as the Sea to Sky’s favourite family DJ and advocate for kids’ creative expression.
“We are thrilled that Ira Pettle has been recognized this year as the community’s Champion for Arts and Culture. Ira’s talent and tenacity has ensured that both kids and adults have local performance education opportunities and his passion for bringing families together with music, fun and celebration is unsurpassed.” said Maureen Douglas, Executive Director at Arts Whistler.
Nominations submitted by Jason McLean and Leigh Gaines Rojette, best capture why Ira is a true arts champion.
From Jason McLean:
“A graduate of the acclaimed Second City Conservatory Program, with a Master of Education degree, Ira Pettle is a champion of the Whistler Arts & Culture community. With more than 25 years of experience performing, producing and teaching theatre, his compassionate demeanor and soul-filled authenticity create safe spaces where participants break through barriers and (re)discover their creativity and confidence with velocity. His work truly transforms. He commits to the Whistler arts community continuously by taking part (including loads of his volunteer time) in numerous productions of theatre, teaching others about acting and helps find the best in themselves but most of all Ira strives to also teach music and improv to children so that they can be inspired to lead a lifetime of supporting the Arts community just like Ira always has and always will.”
From Leigh Gaines Rojette:
“Ira is a community leader in the performing arts of Whistler. He creates entertaining, high quality performances, education and productions for visitors and locals. His improv and theatre classes are for kids and adults alike. He is well liked among his peers and students.”
An Impressive Collection of Nominees
There were a number of strong nominees alongside Ira Pettle, with the top three including one of Whistler’s most dynamic artists, Andrea Mueller, and talented fabric artist and ambassador extraordinaire for the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, Cheximiya Allison Burns Joseph. Both Andrea and Allison have helped grow Whistler’s arts sector and enthusiastically encourage people to discover their own creativity.
More About the Award
The Champion of Arts and Culture award was created by Arts Whistler in 2003 on behalf of the arts community, to recognize local businesses for their contributions to arts, culture, and heritage in Whistler. In 2014, the award was expanded to include individuals – the volunteers, cultural workers, and artists who have also made enormous contributions to our community for many years. The selection jury is comprised of members of the arts and business community. As a dedicated business champion of the arts, Whistler Real Estate Company continues to demonstrate their support of the arts community as the presenting award sponsor again this year. Past recipients include Joan Richoz, Stella Harvey, Stephen Vogler, Mountain Life Magazine and Angie Nolan.
