FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 13, 2018
ROCK STAR EXPERTS SHARE THEIR SECRETS FOR HOW TO BUILD A KICK-ASS CREATIVE CAREER
Arts Whistler presents Arts-U: From Inspired to Hired on December 8, 2018 at the Maury Young Arts Centre.
WHISTLER, BC – Arts Whistler is providing support for local artists in a whole new way with Arts-U: From Inspired to Hired. This game-changing event invites artists, creatives, performers and musicians for an immersive day of learning, inspiration and ideas.
Led by some of the most respected experts in Canada’s arts and entertainment community, six interactive sessions will help artists and creatives grow their professional skills in performance and presentation skills, marketing, business management and locating new career opportunities.
Actor, musician and playwright Beverley Elliott will offer an opening keynote address with a healthy dose of inspiration and practical advice. Beverley has expansive experience in film, television, theatre and music, from a recurring role as Granny in TV’s “Once Upon A Time”, to roles in major motion pictures including Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning “Unforgiven”, to one-woman theatre hits. Beverley will share the secrets to being a successful career performer.
Veteran actor, director, writer and producer Lorne Cardinal (everyone’s favourite cop on “Corner Gas”) joins partner Monique Hurteau for a presentation skills and audience rapport workshop. Monique is an accomplished interdisciplinary artist, writer and educator, with a little stand-up comedy thrown in for fun.
Expert insight to the music industry will be provided by one of Canada’s top band managers (The Strumbellas, daysormay), Joanne Setterington, who is also a veteran publicist with her Toronto-based agency, Indoor Recess.
Joanne will join Squamish-based wordsmith and marketing whiz, Jess Robson, for a session on marketing and promotion. Jess will take the scariest artist thing ever – writing about yourself – and turn self-promotion into an easy art form. Joanne will be there to provide the scoop on artist promo that has really rocked.
Visual artists won’t want to miss our panel of art gallery gurus sharing insights on how to develop your portfolio, get gallery representation and understand the gallery/artist relationship. Featuring Liz Harris, owner and curator of Adele Campbell Fine Art, Liz Peacock, co-director and manager of Mountain Galleries Whistler, and Pennylane Shen, a Vancouver-based artists’ advisor and art consultant who works with the Bau-Xi Gallery and other Canadian galleries.
Rounding out the program is a session all about “Takin’ Care of Business”, providing practical and accessible advice on artist contracts, finances, paying your taxes, filing GST and all those other sexy details that are essential to professional success.
