“Lightscapes”:  An exhibition of plein-air oil and water-colour paintings by artist Jose L. De Juan

October 23 – November 17, 2019 | The Gallery @ Cove Commons, Bowen Island

The immediacy of plein air attempts to hold on to a moment . Through paint, Jose’s work is an invitation to notice the light, to take a second look as we pass by. So we can rest on the surprise of recognizing that the true origin of light’s emotion is really us . Never mind the subject and the burdens we hang on beauty. Whether Urban or natural, moody or bright, routine of fleeting, Jose’s aim is to show that the travel is ours to keep, that any spot will do to lure excitement from our brush. Find out more.

About the Artist:

Levi Nelson is an emerging and very talented, insightful artist from the Lil’wat Nation, whose traditional territory extends from Rubble Creek, through Whistler, Green Lake, Pemberton, Mt. Currie, and all the way to the far end of Lillooet lake. Svpyan, is his traditional name, translating to “The Younger One.” He lives and paints his surroundings as he instinctively feels; One foot fully engaged in the traditions of his Lil’wat heritage, and the other toe dipped in the education system of his fourth year at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design; working towards his BFA.

Levi Nelson makes art that speaks to many people on different levels, as he says, “The Disney cartoon of Snow White, or Bambi is just as much a part of my life and youth as the Deer song or the Woman’s Warrior song of my people, or China Lily Soya Sauce on my fish and rice, I was just a small boy from an Indian reserve who had the gall to shoot for the stars, and I see them shining so brightly at this very moment, Kukstumulhcacw nkwilsten (thank you creator).”

Exhibit: Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast @ Audain Art Museum

Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast

Exhibit: September 21, 2019 – January 19, 2020

Co-Curated by Kiriko Watanabe, the AAM’s Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator and Dr. Kathryn Bridge

A bold undertaking by the Audain Art Museum (AAM) uncovers new information about dramatic changes in Emily Carr’s approach to painting over the course of three critical years: 1910 to 1912. Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast investigates Carr’s momentous journey to France (1910-1911) that broke the bonds of her conservative art training.

Drawn from national and international public, private and corporate collections, this exhibition provides a rare opportunity for AAM visitors to view over 50 paintings, watercolours, and drawings by Carr, along with a selection of works by Carr’s instructors whose work directly influenced her artistic development. These include English painter Henry William Phelan Gibb, Scottish painter John Duncan Fergusson and New Zealand watercolourist Frances Hodgkins.

Opening September 21, 2019, Fresh Seeing is presented by RBC with the support of major sponsors Heffel Fine Art Auction House and Tom and Teresa Gautreau, as well as financial assistance from the Government of Canada through the Museum Assistance Program. PACART is the exclusive transportation partner of this exhibition.

This exhibition is organized by the Audain Art Museum, Whistler B.C. and will travel to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, N.B. March 1 – May 31, 2020.

Established in 2007, the Kwi Am Choi Exhibition Scholarship is an annual award of $2,000 that recognizes an emerging BC artist between the ages of 18 and 30, and is designed to fund the costs of mounting a solo exhibition of their work at the Port Moody Arts Centre. This initiative provides students currently enrolled in, or recent graduates of, Fine Arts programs at recognized post-secondary institutions in Canada with the opportunity to display their work in a publicly funded gallery, receive curatorial mentorship, and network with other artists and art professionals.

About the Kwi Am Choi Scholarship Fund

The Kwi Am Choi Scholarship Fund was endowed by the family of internationally acclaimed artist Kwi Am Choi in 2007. Born in South Korea, Choi lived and worked in Port Moody, where he was an active member of the local arts community and a mentor to young artists. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD), Choi became known for his experimental and abstract work. In the spirit of both his experimental practice and artistic mentorship, the Kwi Am Choi endowment fund was established to provide support to emerging artists by covering the costs of mounting a solo exhibition at the Port Moody Arts Centre as an integral component of expanding their artistic careers.

Applicant Criteria:

• Between 18 and 30 years of age
• Enrolled in a Fine Arts program in a recognized post-secondary institution, or a recent graduate of a Fine Arts program from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution in Canada (within 2 years of graduation)
• Considered an emerging artist. We define emerging artists as those artists in the first few years of their professional development and not currently making their entire living from their artwork
• A resident of British Columbia
Note: Current PoMoArts staff, instructors, sitting board members or their immediate family are not eligible to apply.

Use of Scholarship Funds

Scholarship funds are to be applied to the artist’s costs of mounting an exhibition to take place sometime between May and August 2020 at the Port Moody Arts Centre. These costs may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Preparation expenses for the artworks, including framing
• Transportation costs for artwork
• Advertising and marketing costs for an exhibition
• Opening reception, gallery fees, and related administrative costs

We read something for everyone: throughout the year, we’ll explore different genres and read books by authors with diverse backgrounds and experiences. It might sound obvious, but we highly recommend you read the book to effectively engage in the conversation!

When: Wednesday, November 27, 7 p.m.
Where: Fireplace Lounge, Whistler Public Library
Who: Everyone welcome, no registration required
How much: Free
Which book: There There by Tommy Orange
Where to get a copy: Borrow at WPL or buy at Armchair Books (mention the book club and receive 15% off)

Synopsis: Here is a story of several people, each of whom has private reasons for travelling to the Big Oakland Powwow. Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and has come to work at the powwow to honour his uncle’s memory. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil Red Feather, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and has come to the powwow to dance in public for the very first time.

There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and unspeakable loss.

Read ahead: There will be no Book Club meeting in December, but we’ll return in January!

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe @ Eagle Eye Theatre, Squamish
Nov 28 – Dec 7 all-day

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe

  • Nov 28th – Dec 7th | Eagle Eye Theatre – 38430 Buckley Avenue (Inside Howe Sound Secondary School) Squamish, BC | 7:30pm with matinees on the 30th and 7th at 2pm
  • Tickets are available at www.betweenshiftstheatre.com or in person at Billie’s Flower House

This new stage adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ classic, set in the land of Narnia, faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, never-to-be-forgotten Narnia. The intense action features chases, duels and escapes as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her possession and to end the reign of Aslan. All the memorable episodes from the story are represented in this exciting dramatization.

Find out more:

Before there was Harry Potter and his wizarding world there was C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia. If you grew up reading The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe then no doubt you can remember imagining yourself climbing through a wardrobe hoping to discover a mythical world filled with talking animals, witches and magic. This winter Between Shifts Theatre invites you to crawl through the wardrobe with them as they breath life into this classic story where even a small child can overcome the forces of evil.

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe is one of the most ambitious productions Between Shifts has ever mounted and is a true testament to Squamish talent.   Local writer, Sara Marrocco, has beautifully adapted this story for the stage being directed by Amy Reid and Kathy Daniels.  This director duo’s first project was last years’ well-loved A Christmas Story and they are back again with another family classic of a very different sort.  “We wanted to create something that was a visual feast” says Amy Reid “Something that felt like a dream that audiences of all ages would really love watching.  To do that we needed to incorporate all kinds of mediums including art, music and dance.  We are so lucky to have such incredible talent in our community to pull from!” Designer Michael K. Hewitt has written a stunning original score for this production and Jen Carney of The Preforming Arts Centre has been brought in to choreograph the tiny wood nymphs who gracefully transport us from scene to scene.  Katja Grilli, a professional wig maker who got her start in the German opera, along with her son Pedro Johnson, and industry professional Janet Dundas, are just a few of the incredibly talented team working on hair, makeup and costumes to complete this dazzling, not-to-be missed production.

Join the Pevensie children played by Kai Thompson, Jaeda Willson-Rymer, Pepe Johnson and Lula Rodriguez Reid on an adventure to defeat The White Witch (Amy Reid) and save Narnia with the help of Mrs Beaver (Johanne Neilsen ), Mr Tumnas (Ethan Lapointe), and of course The Mighty Aslan ( Brodie Prescott).  This breathtaking, all-ages production boasts a cast of 20 and one of the largest design teams Between Shifts has ever assembled.  Pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate, grab some Turkish delight and get lost in one of the true greats.  You won’t be disappointed.

Eagle Eye Theatre Nov 28th – Dec 7th

7:30pm with matiness on the 30th and 7th at 2pm

December 1, 2019 for the winter edition, April 1, 2020 for the summer edition, and August 1, 2020 for the Fall for Arts edition.

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers:

  • What’s the deadline?:
December 1 is the hard deadline to submit your events to be included in the print magazine but events can be added to our website anytime and will be included in regular outreach marketing.
  • How do I give you my events?
Easy! Follow this link, click the orange “Post Your Event” button, and fill out the online form.
  • How much does it cost?
It’s FREE! Arts Whistler is a non-profit charity organization, we have a mandate to help support our local creatives and to help foster the arts in Whistler.
  • Why should I participate?
Our printed Arts Scenes are distributed around Whistler and throughout the Sea to Sky. Your events will also be promoted on our website, in our newsletters, on our social media channels, and in printed marketing collateral throughout the season. (Take a look at our current and past editions).
  • I’m not sure if you want my event?
We promote everything arts, culture, and heritage throughout the Sea to Sky – that’s from Bowen Island all the way up to Mt. Currie. If you have any events, workshops, gallery openings, festivals, live music, films, artist calls for entry, kids workshops… between September 1 and December 31, 2019, and we’d love to hear about them!
Still not sure about your event? Shoot us an email, we’re happy to help.
  • What about the maps? My art is hanging in a local shop, can I add it to your listings?
Our Culture Maps are listed in every edition of Arts Scene and include the We Heart Local Art venues and artists. Following on the years of ArtWalk success, We Heart Local Art enables businesses to directly connect with local artists to display artwork on their walls. Think of it as an online dating service…but for art! Find out more.
  • Can I purchase an ad in Arts Scene?
We want to keep the publication chock full of events and listings and not fill it up with advertising. We have a very limited amount of ad spaces reserved for our premier sponsors and have room for a couple of purchased ads. If you’re interested in purchasing an ad, please email esuckling@artswhistler.com for details.
  • I still have questions…If you have any questions about what we do at Arts Whistler, questions about Arts Scene, or how to get involved in the local creative scene – get in touch! info@artswhistler.com

Head on down to Our Lady of the Mountains Church after the show to catch the Whistler Singers in their annual Christmas concert, Winter Lights. 7pm | By Donation. Find out more.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

On the pedal harp and vocals, Janelle Nadeau will be joined by Vancouver based violinist, Serena Eades. Medieval instrumentalist, Joaquin Ayala rounds out the group with his special collection of rare instruments dating back from the 9th century.

This unforgettable concert will create an intimate atmosphere where the musicians share their childhood memories; stories of Christmases past; tales of adored Christmas songs and unforgettable melodies that can warm the hearts of audiences event in the middle of wintery Manitoba. The wit and humour of the band members will surely entertain audiences, inviting them to kick back and enjoy the uplifting sounds of the holidays.

JANELLE NADEAU
Harpists are often described as angelic. Vancouver harpist Janelle Nadeau is magnetic. She has a way of drawing people in with her warm and engaging performance style. Janelle draws from a diverse repertoire of classical, Celtic, original, contemporary tunes and storytelling.Currently the acting principle harpist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, the Turning Point Ensemble and her own groups, Janelle maintains a rigorous performing schedule. She has shared the stage with everyone from Diana Krall and Kanye West to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and has performed on television and radio including on the CBS show, Supergirl.

Janelle performs with her own Christmas group, a trio (harp, violin and cello) as well as her solo shows. She has toured with Home Routes, Winter Harp, Celebrity Cruises, the Turning Point Ensemble and the National Youth Orchestra in the United States, Singapore, Beijing, Taiwan and across Canada. Find out more.

JOAQUIN AYALA
Joaquín Ayala is a multi-instrumentalist who discovered his passion for early keyboard instruments after studying Classical piano. Born in Catalonia, he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music and went on to become a pipe organ and harpsichord specialist, with a focus on Baroque music.  After graduation he attended Early Music concerts throughout Europe, where he discovered the nyckleharpa and the hurdy gurdy, two related keyboard instruments, and was so smitten he immediately started studying both of them. The symphonie is an ancient ancestor of the hurdy-gurdy which sounds like a bagpipe, and is played by turning a crank on the side of the instrument. The bass and tenor nyckleharpas are traditional Swedish fiddles and bowed much like a violin, though played with a series of interlocking keys. Joaquin and his eclectic collection of instruments have been featured on radio, television, and various films, and he has toured extensively throughout Canada.

SERENA EADES
Vancouver-based violinist Serena Eades’ unique style reflects a lifetime of studying western classical music and various folk idioms – primarily Celtic and Brazilian music. She is a member of Delhi 2 Dublin and has performed with Dream Theatre, Alejandro Sanz, Tanya Tagaq, Tony Trishka, Alison Brown, Matt Glaser, Gooral, CR Avery and more. Serena has toured throughout North America, Malaysia, India and the UK, playing stages from Burning Man to Glastonbury, San Francisco’s famed Fillmore to Vancouver’s iconic Commodore Ballroom. Her distinct sound is rich, full bodied, textured, and animated. With a B.Mus. from the Berklee College of Music and many years in the music industry she is at home as a performer, recording artist and educator.

Arts Whistler & Cinema Politica Present: Documentary Futurism

Science Fiction-influenced Indigenous and Afrofuturist short films

Don’t miss an evening of thought-provoking and progressive short films from across Canada. This two-hour program of speculative short films envision various futures for Canada through Afrofuturist and Indigenous futurist perspectives – from dystopia to utopia, expect the unexpected. The films are impressive in how they blend documentary approaches with science fiction storytelling – some witty and insightful, others poetic and experimental, offering a range of stories.

The project was commissioned by Cinema Politica, a Montreal-based organization that showcases documentaries across the country, and is hosted by local director tobias c. van Veen, whose Afrofuturist short film Lost Alien was (secretly) shot right here in Whistler. These films were made possible through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Films will be followed by a Q+A with tobias c. van Veen, director of Lost Alien. Find out more about tobias.

Community Book Club: Becoming @ Whistler Public Library
Jan 29 @ 7:00 pm
Community Book Club: Becoming @ Whistler Public Library

Whistler Public Library and Armchair Books have joined forces to start a Community Book Club! Free and open to all, the club meets on the last Wednesday of each month. We read something for everyone: throughout the year, we’ll explore different genres and read books by authors with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our choices might make you laugh, cry, or challenge a long-held belief, but whether you love or hate the book, we promise a lively, thought-provoking discussion. It might sound obvious, but we highly recommend you read the book to effectively engage in the conversation!

When: Wednesday, January 29, 7 p.m.
Where: Fireplace Lounge, Whistler Public Library
Who: Everyone welcome, no registration required
How much: Free
Which book: Becoming by Michelle Obama
Where to get a copy: Borrow at WPL or buy at Armchair Books (mention the book club and receive 15% off)

Synopsis: In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her – from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it – in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations – and whose story inspires us to do the same.

ARTS WHISTLER LIVE! Andrew Collins Trio @ Maury Young Arts Centre
Feb 5 @ 6:30 pm

ARTS WHISTLER LIVE!

Andrew Collins Trio

Calling Andrew Collins a master of the mandolin is the definition of an understatement. Garnering a reputation for dynamic, genre-hopping live performances full of energy and captivating vocals, Collins’ trio is perfectly rounded out by fellow string guru Mike Mezzatesta and in-the-pocket bassist James McEleney. Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins & Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp.

Join us at 7:00pm for an intimate pre-show session with the Trio; get to know the band, their instruments and how they pull it all together to produce their captivating live performance.

Over the course of 45 minutes, the Andrew Collins Trio will demonstrate the various instruments and styles of music you will hear during their performance. Get to know each member of the Trio as they describe how the instruments they play compliment each genre in different ways and what their roles are in each context.
The Andrew Colling Trio are masters of the mandolin, mandocello fiddle, guitar, and bass, and will demonstrate examples of jazz music, classical music, bluegrass, Celtic, and old-time with an explanation of what characteristics define each genre.

  • Date: Wednesday, February 5, 2020
  • Times: 6:30pm | Theatre Doors & Bar open
7:00pm | Pre-show session – get to know the Trio

“The level of musicianship is outstanding, as you’d expect from a serial award winner such as Andrew Collins. He must be one of the best mandolin players in the business”

 – Americana, UK

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

You may already know the wildly exploratory Andrew Collins through his work with The Foggy Hogtown Boys, the equally mind-bending Creaking Tree String Quartet or the Trio itself – but you’ll never put a label on him for his approach to folk, newgrass, jazz and even some chamber-oriented roots music. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman.

Andrew’s skills on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, mandocello and vocals merge with the rich talents of Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals). Appearing to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, the Trio’s dizzying number and energetic interplay of instruments on stage are likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp!
