What’s in a Name?

Maurice “Maury” Young was an avid sailor, skier, and philanthropist who had a big impact on the Whistler community. The Young family believed in Whistler’s future from the early days of the area’s ski development, and Maury began serving as the chair of the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation in 1988, a position he held for nine years.

To honour Maury when he passed in 1999 the Young family donated two million dollars to help make the building of the centre possible. They knew that Maury would be proud to have his name attached to a figurative and literal stage, for residents and visitors alike, to interact and share their passions and life experiences.

Our Tips

In 1999 the old sport of skiing had just been given new life, and Level 1 was conceived to document its progress into the future. With twenty years in the rear view mirror it still stands true- new things never get old. Romance, the final chapter of annual films by Level 1, captures a modern-day Golden Age in skiing. Featuring a generation of talent that came of age in the best time to ever do it. Tweaking the formula, tweaking the grab, and in it for nothing but the love.

ARTS WHISTLER LIVE! Terra Lightfoot @ Maury Young Arts Centre

ARTS WHISTLER LIVE!

Terra Lightfoot

Genuine bluesy soul. With opening act Sam Weber

Whether you’re talking about her as a songwriter, guitarist or vocalist, one thing is indisputable: Hamilton’s Terra Lightfoot is a ferocious talent. Her songs tap into the raw emotion of hearts supercharged by love, lust, loneliness and temptation. Her playing melds expert finger-picking and distorted, hook-heavy melodies. And her elemental voice commands attention and awe, whether on slow-burning soul ballads or hard-charging rock numbers.

With her latest album, New Mistakes, Lightfoot offers up something rare: the kind of genuine document that can only come from a road-tested breed of songwriter and performer. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful, bluesy soul, vivid lyrics and ferocious six-string virtuosity, this will be an unforgettable outing. From the ground-shaking stomp of “Paradise” and wild-eyed energy of “Pinball King” that open the set, to the psychedelic, gospel-tinged album closer “Lonesome Eyes,” the steel town native’s third record distills her masterful talent to its electrifying essence.

“If you haven’t seen Terra Lightfoot perform live, then do yerself a favour and get a ticket next time she’s in town. Lightfoot is the total package: she can write a hooky tune, rip through a blistering guitar solo and sing the hell out of any song she likes” – CBC Music

After the Blast by Levi Nelson

AFTER THE BLAST: The Art of Levi Nelson

Having a place in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures growing up, Levi Nelson shares his compelling perspective on the impacts of colonization, influenced by both cultural traditions and pop culture. From profound insights to wry humour, Levi’s images have a lasting impact on the viewer.

Levi’s first solo show, “After the Blast”, will guide visitors on a journey through the metaphorical world of what happened to the aboriginal people of this country after first contact; surviving near genocide, indifference, and at last assimilation.

About the Artist:

Levi Nelson is an emerging and very talented, insightful artist from the Lil’wat Nation, whose traditional territory extends from Rubble Creek, through Whistler, Green Lake, Pemberton, Mt. Currie, and all the way to the far end of Lillooet lake. Svpyan, is his traditional name, translating to “The Younger One.” He lives and paints his surroundings as he instinctively feels; One foot fully engaged in the traditions of his Lil’wat heritage, and the other toe dipped in the education system of his fourth year at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design; working towards his BFA.

Levi Nelson makes art that speaks to many people on different levels, as he says, “The Disney cartoon of Snow White, or Bambi is just as much a part of my life and youth as the Deer song or the Woman’s Warrior song of my people, or China Lily Soya Sauce on my fish and rice, I was just a small boy from an Indian reserve who had the gall to shoot for the stars, and I see them shining so brightly at this very moment, Kukstumulhcacw nkwilsten (thank you creator).”

Submit Your Events for the 2020 Winter Edition of Arts Scene!
Dec 1 all-day
Submit Your Events for the 2020 Winter Edition of Arts Scene!

We’re gearing up for the 12th edition of Arts Scene

Arts and culture is booming in Whistler and the Sea to Sky!

From January 1 – April 30, 2020 there are so many creative festivals, events, holidays, and celebrations, and we want you to be a part of it!

All of the content is generated by members of our community and the amount of content in the printed magazine and traffic to the online calendar continue to grow! More and more people are discovering the creative side of our towns, including arts programming in their festivals, buying handmade gifts, and hanging local art on their walls. Plus, it’s free to submit your events – now that’s a win!

Scroll down to see our list of questions and answers for more information about how to post, cover art, advertising opportunities, map locations, and more.

Posting is easy!
Click the orange “Post Your Event” button, and fill in your info – we look forward to seeing your events!

SUBMIT YOUR EVENTS BY DECEMBER 1, 2019

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers:

  • What’s the deadline?:
December 1 is the hard deadline to submit your events to be included in the print magazine but events can be added to our website anytime and will be included in regular outreach marketing.
  • How do I give you my events?
Easy! Follow this link, click the orange “Post Your Event” button, and fill out the online form.
  • How much does it cost?
It’s FREE! Arts Whistler is a non-profit charity organization, we have a mandate to help support our local creatives and to help foster the arts in Whistler.
  • Why should I participate?
Our printed Arts Scenes are distributed around Whistler and throughout the Sea to Sky. Your events will also be promoted on our website, in our newsletters, on our social media channels, and in printed marketing collateral throughout the season. (Take a look at our current and past editions).
  • I’m not sure if you want my event?
We promote everything arts, culture, and heritage throughout the Sea to Sky – that’s from Bowen Island all the way up to Mt. Currie. If you have any events, workshops, gallery openings, festivals, live music, films, artist calls for entry, kids workshops… between September 1 and December 31, 2019, and we’d love to hear about them!
Still not sure about your event? Shoot us an email, we’re happy to help.
  • What about the maps? My art is hanging in a local shop, can I add it to your listings?
Our Culture Maps are listed in every edition of Arts Scene and include the We Heart Local Art venues and artists. Following on the years of ArtWalk success, We Heart Local Art enables businesses to directly connect with local artists to display artwork on their walls. Think of it as an online dating service…but for art! Find out more.
  • Can I purchase an ad in Arts Scene?
We want to keep the publication chock full of events and listings and not fill it up with advertising. We have a very limited amount of ad spaces reserved for our premier sponsors and have room for a couple of purchased ads. If you’re interested in purchasing an ad, please email esuckling@artswhistler.com for details.
  • I still have questions…If you have any questions about what we do at Arts Whistler, questions about Arts Scene, or how to get involved in the local creative scene – get in touch! info@artswhistler.com

Make Your Mark on the Winter 2020 Cover!

We support local – always have, always will.

Previous versions of Arts Scene have all featured art created by a local artist on the cover, and we want your work to be next!.
Arts Whistler Members can submit a piece for consideration for the upcoming edition. The chosen artist will be given an honorarium and the chance to see their art all over town for a whole season!

We are currently accepting your winter art submissions for the Winter 2020 Arts Scene Cover. Deadline for submissions: December 1, 2019

Arts Whistler & Cinema Politica Present: Documentary Futurism

Science Fiction-influenced Indigenous and Afrofuturist short films

Don’t miss an evening of thought-provoking and progressive short films from across Canada. This two-hour program of speculative short films envision various futures for Canada through Afrofuturist and Indigenous futurist perspectives – from dystopia to utopia, expect the unexpected. The films are impressive in how they blend documentary approaches with science fiction storytelling – some witty and insightful, others poetic and experimental, offering a range of stories.

The project was commissioned by Cinema Politica, a Montreal-based organization that showcases documentaries across the country, and is hosted by local director tobias c. van Veen, whose Afrofuturist short film Lost Alien was (secretly) shot right here in Whistler. These films were made possible through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Films will be followed by a Q+A with tobias c. van Veen, director of Lost Alien. Find out more about tobias.

ARTS WHISTLER LIVE!

Andrew Collins Trio

Calling Andrew Collins a master of the mandolin is the definition of an understatement. Garnering a reputation for dynamic, genre-hopping live performances full of energy and captivating vocals, Collins’ trio is perfectly rounded out by fellow string guru Mike Mezzatesta and in-the-pocket bassist James McEleney. Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins & Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp.

Join us at 7:00pm for an intimate pre-show session with the Trio; get to know the band, their instruments and how they pull it all together to produce their captivating live performance.

Over the course of 45 minutes, the Andrew Collins Trio will demonstrate the various instruments and styles of music you will hear during their performance. Get to know each member of the Trio as they describe how the instruments they play compliment each genre in different ways and what their roles are in each context.
The Andrew Colling Trio are masters of the mandolin, mandocello fiddle, guitar, and bass, and will demonstrate examples of jazz music, classical music, bluegrass, Celtic, and old-time with an explanation of what characteristics define each genre.

“The level of musicianship is outstanding, as you’d expect from a serial award winner such as Andrew Collins. He must be one of the best mandolin players in the business”

 – Americana, UK

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

You may already know the wildly exploratory Andrew Collins through his work with The Foggy Hogtown Boys, the equally mind-bending Creaking Tree String Quartet or the Trio itself – but you’ll never put a label on him for his approach to folk, newgrass, jazz and even some chamber-oriented roots music. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman.

Andrew’s skills on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola, mandocello and vocals merge with the rich talents of Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals). Appearing to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, the Trio’s dizzying number and energetic interplay of instruments on stage are likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp! ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

Charlie Demers: Charlie Demers is an author of five books and a stand-up comedian. His collection of essays, Vancouver Special, was shortlisted for the Hubert Evans BC Book Prize for Non-Fiction. He is also the author of The Prescription Errors, The Horrors: An A to Z of Funny Thoughts on Awful Things and The Dad Dialogues co-written with George Bowering. Charlie’s latest book, the novel Property Values, was published in April 2018.
Demers has performed for national television and radio audiences and at the Just for Laughs Festival, and is one of the most frequently returning stars of CBC Radio’s smash-hit comedy show The Debaters. Find out more.

Ivan Decker: Ivan Decker, originally from Vancouver, now Los Angeles- based, is a writer, stand-up comedian and actor, known for his sharp, polished, and multi-layered observational comedy. A force on the scene as one of Canada’s top comedians, Ivan Decker has become a favorite among audiences and comedians alike.
He has performed stand-up comedy across North America and can be seen and heard as a part of the popular CBC radio program “The Debaters”. Most recently, Ivan was named a “Comic To Watch” by TBS at the New York Comedy Festival, and subsequently made his U.S. television debut on “Conan.”
His fun and silly approach to stand up often reveals the humour hiding in the everyday trials of today’s young adult with careful dissection, brilliant timing and intelligent observation.
Ivan’s most recent comedy album “I Wanted to be a Dinosaur” won the 2018 Juno Award for Comedy Album of the Year. It can be heard on all major streaming platforms and is available on iTunes. Find out more.
